Supporting Education in Nigeria

News, Poor
Sam Amara, based in Lagos and part of the Catalyst apostolic sphere of Newfrontiers, not only is an international church planter and Bible teacher but also, with his wife Lovette, has a huge heart for bringing high quality education to the many poor or deprived children in his nation. In June I had the joy of Sam coming to visit me. During that time I was able to record an interview with him about education and all that they are doing. I think you will be inspired as you watch. Click on picture. If you feel you would like to be involved there are links given at the end of the video, or contact Sam direct.

Some reflections on the impact and influence of church unity

Equipping, News, Poor
I feel passionately that the world should learn from the church. But that does not imply that we should be ignorant or arrogant about what we can learn in the other direction! But, for me, ‘Thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven’ has a very practical and influential application. Recently I had the privilege of joining about 100 others from around the nation at a Gather Summit where unity was shared and discussed. Many towns, boroughs and cities told their stories, some, such as York, stretching over 20 years. What is unity? The gathering was shaped by the desire to share experience of unity among churches and I tried to be attentive to discern how this had come about and what was the fruit. Unity is, I…

Book: Dictatorland – the men who stole Africa

News
Recently published, this fascinating, insightful yet sobering book is for anyone who is interested in Africa. Kenyon has thoroughly researched many of the extreme dictatorships in Africa over the past half century, also drawing on earlier history, and describes interviews with people from all levels of society. He also describes some of the events witnessed by himself and others into what are sometimes horrific human atrocities. Despite its length (400+ pages) I found this book compulsive reading as the author moved from one nation to another describing the antics and resulting consequences of dictators who have dominated so many African nations. Corruption, of course, featured prominently but he also reported on the repression to their own people groups and, in many cases, the willingness of the international community to ‘turn…

Prayer for the UK

News
What a pleasure and privilege to gather with nearly 600 leaders in London for a day of prayer for the nation on March 20th. Westminster Chapel is not only an ideal venue but is also located near the Houses of Parliament – interesting at such a time as this. As leaders in the Newfrontiers family we used to meet for two days of prayer three times per year for several decades. But growth and the multiplication of apostolic spheres has made this impractical. However, we are a movement for which prayer has been a vital ingredient, so to gather together from time to time is still very important. Worship Ably led by Simon Brading and musicians, worship was a key part of the day, interspersing times of prayer and prophecy.…

Culture and Cheese – Book Reviews

News
It's all about people Recently I have read two books related to the culture and dynamics of life in business. But since a successful business relies heavily on the relationships between people much of what was written also applies to the church and to individual lives. So I commend both books to you, whether you have responsibility for others in a community environment, such as a business or church, or whether you want to handle change in your personal or work life more effectively. Shaping your Workplace Culture - Vanessa O’Shea I have known Vanessa for many years. We were in the same church. I was aware of her responsibilities working for the YMCA but, until I spotted this book, published only a few weeks ago, I was unaware of…

Return from Guinea

News, Poor
Where did it all start? Ministry in another nation carries significant opportunities and challenges. 15 years ago Nicolas and Elaine Thebault moved to Guinea with their young family to support the local leadership of a church planted there with refugees from the Sierra Leonean civil war of the '90s. But it became necessary to replant the church and to start a new school to cope with the demands of that migrant population. Since then the initial church of ten people (plus seven of the Thebault family!) has grown to over 200, predominantly of people who have become followers of Jesus under their ministry. There have been well over 100 baptisms. Local leaders have been trained and built up. The school, which now numbers well over 300, covers the full educational…
